Kusasenrigahama

Kusasenrigahama is an expansive volcanic grassland located in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. Situated at an altitude of 1,130 meters above sea level, this natural area is formed by two volcanic craters positioned between Mt. Eboshi and Mt. Kishima. The site has earned official recognition as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and forms part of the broader Mount Aso region, which has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark due to its significant volcanic geology.

The grasslands extend across approximately 785,000 square meters (or 78.5 hectares), featuring two ponds that mark the locations of former volcanic craters. These water bodies are formed by rainwater collection and serve as focal points within the landscape. The area represents the original pastoral scenery of Aso, with cattle and horses grazing freely across the open terrain throughout the year. Mount Aso itself is one of the world's largest calderas, and Kusasenrigahama provides visitors with panoramic views of the volcanic peaks, including the still-active Mount Nakadake crater with its rising volcanic smoke.

Visitors can explore the grasslands through walking trails that range from quick five-minute strolls to longer hour-long hikes across the plains. Horseback riding experiences are available, with staff-led tours lasting approximately 10 minutes for ¥1,500, making the activity accessible even for children and beginners. The Aso Volcano Museum, located adjacent to the parking area, offers educational exhibits about volcanic geology and provides live video feeds from the Nakadake crater for ¥1,100 admission. Multiple restaurants and cafes operate in the area, serving local specialties including Kumamoto ramen and dishes featuring regional Akaushi beef.

Entry to Kusasenrigahama itself is free, though parking costs ¥500 for regular cars (or ¥200 for motorcycles) at the main facility. The location can be reached by car in approximately 50 minutes from Kumamoto Airport or 80 minutes from Kumamoto City. For public transport users, take the Sanko Bus from Aso Station (JR Hohi Main Line) toward Aso Sanjo Terminal and alight at the Kusasenri Aso Kazan Hakubutsukan-mae bus stop, a journey of 29 minutes. Note that certain areas near the active crater may be temporarily closed due to volcanic activity or toxic gas levels, so checking current conditions before visiting is advisable.
