三鴨宿場桜、真庭

Mikamo Shukuba Sakura is a historic cherry blossom viewing site located in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, in the Chugoku region of western Japan. The site centers on a single ancient cherry tree estimated to be over 700 years old, standing in what was once the post town of Mikamo along the historic Izumo Kaido road. This route connected the Sanyo region with Matsue in present-day Shimane Prefecture, and Mikamo served as a rest stop for travelers during the Edo period.

The tree belongs to the Yamazakura species (wild mountain cherry) and reaches approximately 13 meters in height with a trunk circumference of about 5.8 meters. Its cultural significance extends beyond its age, as it represents one of the finest examples of ancient cherry trees in the Chugoku highlands. The tree has been designated as a natural monument by Maniwa City, recognizing both its botanical rarity and its connection to local heritage.

Visitors come primarily during the spring blooming season to witness the tree in full flower against the backdrop of rural mountain scenery. The site maintains a simple, undeveloped character, with the tree standing in an open field surrounded by the traditional landscape of the former post town. Evening illumination is provided during the brief blooming period, creating nighttime viewing opportunities.

The remote location means fewer crowds compared to urban cherry blossom spots, offering a more contemplative experience. Local volunteers often provide information about the tree's history and the significance of the old Izumo Kaido route.

Access to Mikamo Shukuba Sakura requires private transportation, as the site is located in a mountainous rural area of Maniwa. The nearest major access point is the Chugoku Expressway, with the site approximately 30 minutes by car from the Kuse Interchange. Public transportation options are extremely limited in this region, making rental cars the most practical choice for visitors.
