Oki Shrine

Oki Shrine stands on the remote Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan, approximately 50 kilometers north of mainland Shimane Prefecture. This ancient Shinto sanctuary has served as the spiritual center of the islands for over 1,200 years, with historical records dating its establishment to the early Heian period. The shrine holds particular significance as it was closely associated with Emperor Go-Daigo, who was exiled to the Oki Islands in 1332 during a turbulent period of Japanese imperial history.

The shrine's cultural importance extends beyond its imperial connections. As the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Oki Province, it has long been revered by islanders and pilgrims alike. The main sanctuary exemplifies traditional shrine architecture adapted to the islands' harsh coastal environment, with distinctive features designed to withstand strong winds from the Sea of Japan. Reaching Oki Shrine requires traveling to the Oki Islands first. Ferries operate from Sakaiminato and Shichirui Port on the mainland, with journey times of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to Dōgo Island, where the shrine is located. From the main port, local buses or rental cars can access the shrine in roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The islands also have a small airport with limited flights from Izumo and Osaka Itami.
