Shichirigahama Beach

Shichirigahama Beach is a coastal stretch located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, roughly 50 kilometres southwest of Tokyo. The beach's name translates loosely to "seven-ri shore," a historical reference to the old Japanese unit of distance, reflecting how expansive this coastline once appeared to travellers on the ancient Kamakura road. The area has been associated with Kamakura's samurai heritage since the 12th and 13th centuries, when the city served as the seat of Japan's first shogunate government, and coastal scenes here were immortalised in classical Japanese poetry and woodblock prints.

The beach is widely regarded as one of the most scenic in the Kanagawa region, offering an unobstructed view of Enoshima Island to the west and, on clear days, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rising behind it. This particular vantage point — Fuji framed above the sea with Enoshima in the foreground — is considered one of the classic landscape compositions in Japanese visual culture and draws photographers year-round. The setting was famously referenced in the traditional song "Tōryanse" and has inspired artists across centuries.

Visitors come primarily to walk the approximately 2-kilometre shoreline, swim during summer, and witness the Fuji-Enoshima panorama at sunset, which is especially striking between October and February when atmospheric conditions are clearest. The beach also draws surfers due to its reliable Pacific swells, and several small cafés and restaurants line the road directly behind the shore, with ocean-facing terraces ideal for dining with a view.

The beach is free to access with no admission charge. The most convenient way to arrive is via the Enoden Line (Enoshima Electric Railway), alighting at Shichirigahama Station, a two-minute walk from the shore. The Enoden itself is a historic narrow-gauge line that runs along the coast between Fujisawa and Kamakura, and the ride is considered part of the experience. By car, the beach sits along National Route 134, with paid parking available nearby.
