Shiranoe Botanical Garden

Shiranoe Botanical Garden is located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and serves as one of the city's prominent green spaces dedicated to plant conservation and botanical education. Established in 1980, the garden spans approximately 17 hectares and functions as both a research facility and public park, managed by the Fukuoka City government. The site was developed on land that historically served agricultural purposes before being transformed into a specialized botanical collection.

The garden houses over 2,600 plant species from temperate and subtropical regions, with particular emphasis on flora native to Kyushu and other parts of Asia. Its collection includes significant specimens of camellias, azaleas, and rare fern species, making it an important repository for regional plant biodiversity. The garden plays a crucial role in preserving endangered plant species from the surrounding area and serves as an educational resource for botanical research and environmental awareness.

Visitors can explore several themed sections including a tropical greenhouse, a Japanese garden featuring traditional landscaping techniques, and seasonal flower displays that change throughout the year. The rose garden contains approximately 280 varieties and reaches peak bloom in spring and autumn. Walking paths wind through forested areas and cultivated beds, offering opportunities for leisurely observation of both ornamental and native plantings. The garden provides a peaceful environment for walking, photography, and nature study, particularly popular during cherry blossom season in early April and autumn foliage in November.

Shiranoe Botanical Garden is accessible via public transportation from central Fukuoka. Take the Nishitetsu Bus from Tenjin or Hakata stations, with routes 113 or 114 stopping near the garden entrance; the journey takes approximately 30 minutes. By car, the garden is located about 7 kilometers southwest of Fukuoka city center with parking available on-site for ordinary vehicles at 500 yen per day. Admission fees are 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for high school students, with children under 15 entering free when accompanied by an adult. The garden remains closed on Mondays except during peak seasons and national holidays.
