I visited on a clear, sunny morning and was immediately struck by the tranquility of the grounds — a complete contrast to the busy city outside.
The Hojo Garden is the highlight. The south garden features powerful standing stones arranged across raked white gravel, creating a meditative tension that stays with you. The north garden’s checkerboard pattern of trimmed hedges and white gravel feels both modern and timeless — a testament to the genius of designer Mirei Shigemori.
Walking across Gaun-kyo Bridge, the sound of wooden planks underfoot and the canopy of fresh green maple leaves overhead made for an unforgettable moment. Below the bridge, the Sengyoku-kan ravine was lush with overhanging branches. Komyo-in’s pond garden, tucked away as a sub-temple, was equally beautiful — meticulously maintained moss and sculpted shrubs cascading down a hillside.
The grounds were wonderfully quiet during my visit, allowing me to explore at my own pace. Even outside the famous autumn foliage season, Tofuku-ji is breathtaking in fresh green. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful, deeply Japanese experience in Kyoto.
