Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge

Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge connects Shimonoseki on Honshu to Tsunoshima Island in Yamaguchi Prefecture, stretching 1,780 meters across the emerald waters of the Sea of Japan. Completed in November 2000, the bridge was constructed to improve access to the island's small community of approximately 900 residents and has since become one of Japan's most photographed coastal drives.

The bridge's striking appearance comes from its gentle curves and low elevation, designed to preserve the natural landscape and minimize visual impact on the surrounding seascape. Its graceful arc against the backdrop of white sand beaches and turquoise waters has made it a popular filming location for commercials and television dramas. The bridge is notable for being Japan's second-longest toll-free bridge at the time of its construction, representing a significant infrastructure investment for such a small island population.

Visitors typically drive across the bridge to experience the panoramic ocean views, though the approach from the mainland offers the most dramatic vantage point for photography. The bridge is accessible by car via Route 191 from Shimonoseki, approximately 50 minutes from Shimonoseki city center. Public transportation options include buses from Takibe Station on the JR San'in Main Line, though services are infrequent. There is no toll to cross the bridge. Free parking is available at viewing areas on both the mainland and island sides, with the mainland observation point providing the best angle for capturing the full span of the bridge.
