Bansenso is a historic merchant residence located in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, along the Hiji River. Built in 1901, the residence belonged to the Matsui family, wealthy merchants who prospered through trade and commerce during the late Edo and Meiji periods. The estate represents the architectural sophistication and prosperity of merchant families in Ozu, which thrived as a castle town and river port. The name "Bansenso" translates to "Hall of Ten Thousand Boats," reflecting the family's connection to river commerce and the countless vessels that once plied the Hiji River carrying goods to and from Ozu.

The residence showcases traditional Japanese residential architecture from the Meiji era with Western influences that became fashionable among wealthy families during Japan's modernization. The main building features tatami rooms, intricate wooden craftsmanship, ranma (decorative transoms), and carefully preserved period details. The property includes a traditional Japanese garden designed with meticulous attention to seasonal aesthetics, incorporating a pond, carefully placed stones, and manicured vegetation.

Visitors can tour the interior rooms of the residence, which retain their original layouts and decorative elements including fusuma (sliding doors) with painted designs. The Japanese garden is accessible for strolling, with paths winding around the central pond and offering different perspectives of the landscape design. Seasonal changes bring cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and autumn foliage that enhances the garden's beauty.

Access Bansenso from JR Iyo-Ozu Station by taxi, requiring approximately 10 minutes, or by walking roughly 25 minutes through the historic town center. From major cities, reach Ozu via the JR Yosan Line from Matsuyama (about 35 minutes) or from Okayama via limited express trains (approximately 2.5 hours). The residence is located within walking distance of other Ozu attractions including Ozu Castle and the historic merchant district along the river. Admission costs 550 yen for adults and 220 yen for children.
