Hottarakashi Onsen

Hottarakashi Onsen is a renowned hot spring bath facility perched on the slopes of Mount Takabocchi in Yamanashi Prefecture, approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The onsen opened in 1999 and has since become one of Japan's most celebrated outdoor bathing destinations, drawing visitors primarily for its extraordinary panoramic views of Mount Fuji and the Kofu Basin spread below.

The facility's name translates to "neglected hot spring," a playful reference to its remote location and the feeling of being pleasantly abandoned to nature while soaking. Hottarakashi Onsen consists of two main outdoor bath areas: Kocchi-no-yu (This Side's Bath), the original facility, and Acchi-no-yu (That Side's Bath), which opened in 2003 and offers slightly larger bathing areas. Both feature gender-separated rock-lined pools that blend seamlessly with the surrounding mountainous landscape.

The primary draw is the unobstructed view of Mount Fuji rising majestically to the south, best experienced during sunrise when visitors can witness the first light illuminating Japan's iconic peak while immersed in naturally heated spring water. The onsen maintains a water temperature between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius and sources its alkaline waters from local springs known for their skin-softening properties. On clear days, bathers can observe the sprawling Kofu Valley, vineyards, and distant mountain ranges stretching across the horizon.

The facility provides basic amenities including soap, shampoo, and towel rentals for a small additional fee. A simple refreshment area serves light meals and drinks. Visitors should note that the onsen adheres to traditional Japanese bathing customs, requiring bathers to wash thoroughly before entering the communal pools and prohibiting swimwear, tattoos being generally accepted at this location unlike many traditional establishments.

Hottarakashi Onsen is located approximately 10 kilometers east of central Kofu City. Visitors traveling by train should take the JR Chuo Line to Yamanashi-shi Station, from where a taxi ride of roughly 15 minutes reaches the facility. No public bus service connects directly to the onsen. Those driving can access the site via the Chuo Expressway, exiting at Katsunuma IC and following mountain roads for approximately 25 minutes. Free parking accommodates around 40 vehicles.
