Ieshima Islands

The Ieshima Islands are a cluster of 44 small islands located in the Seto Inland Sea, approximately 18 kilometers southwest of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture. Only four islands are inhabited: Ieshima, Nishijima, Higashijima, and Tanijima, with Ieshima being the largest and main island. The archipelago has served as an important waystation for maritime trade since ancient times, and its strategic location made it a crucial naval base during the Edo period.

The islands are renowned for their pristine natural environment and traditional fishing culture. Ieshima Island features dramatic coastal cliffs, secluded beaches, and crystal-clear waters that make it popular for diving and snorkeling. The area is designated as part of the Setonaikai National Park and serves as an important breeding ground for seabirds. The islands maintain their authentic fishing village atmosphere, with traditional wooden houses and active fishing ports that have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Visitors can explore the scenic coastline by hiking the island walking trails, which offer panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. The islands are particularly famous for sea kayaking and scuba diving, with underwater visibility often exceeding 20 meters. Local fishing experiences are available, allowing visitors to join traditional fishing boats and learn about sustainable fishing practices. The Ieshima Shrine on the main island dates back over 400 years and features a picturesque seaside location.

Summer months from June to September offer the best conditions for water activities, with sea temperatures reaching 25-27°C. Spring brings cherry blossoms to the islands, while autumn provides clear skies ideal for hiking and photography. Winter visits are possible but weather conditions can limit ferry services.

Access to the islands requires taking a ferry from Himeji Port, with Ieshima Kisen operating regular services. The journey to Ieshima Island takes approximately 25 minutes and costs ¥510 for adults. Ferries run 6-8 times daily depending on the season, with reduced services on weekends and holidays. No admission fees are required for the islands themselves, though individual activities and shrine visits may have separate charges. Accommodation options are limited to a few traditional minshuku guesthouses, making day trips from Himeji the most common visiting pattern.
