Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach is located in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, on Japan's northeastern Pacific coast. The name translates to "Pure Land Beach," referencing the Buddhist paradise, and was reportedly given by a monk named Reikyo in 1681 who declared the scenery resembled the Pure Land of Buddhist teachings. The beach sits within Rikuchu Kaigan National Park, a protected coastal area stretching across 180 kilometers of dramatic shoreline.

The beach is distinguished by its striking white volcanic rock formations that contrast sharply with deep blue waters and dense green pine trees. These pale rhyolite stones, shaped by volcanic activity and centuries of wave erosion, create a landscape unlike typical Japanese beaches. The clear, calm waters are sheltered by rocky outcrops, making the area particularly photogenic and accessible for close-up viewing of the geological features.

Visitors can explore the beach on foot during low tide, walk along maintained pathways through the surrounding pine forest, or take sightseeing boat tours that depart regularly from the beach area. These 40-minute cruises navigate through sea caves and around rock pillars, offering perspectives of the formations from the water. The beach also provides opportunities for swimming during summer months, though the season is relatively short due to the northern climate. A visitor center near the beach provides information about the local geology and marine ecosystem.

Access to Jodogahama requires traveling to Miyako city, which is approximately 3.5 hours from Tokyo by taking the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station, then transferring to the JR Yamada Line to Miyako Station. From Miyako Station, local buses run to Jodogahama, taking roughly 20 minutes. The beach area is free to enter, though boat tours require separate payment of approximately ¥1,400 for adults.
