Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo sits in the Tambayaki-no-Sato region of Tamba-Sasayama City, a designated Japan Heritage site that is home to one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. The museum opened in 2005 with the dual mission of promoting ceramic and porcelain culture while fostering exchange among artists and the public. The location itself is historically significant, as Tamba pottery production has continued for over 800 years, tracing its origins back to the late Heian period when local craftsmen adapted techniques from the Tokai region to create distinctive pottery.

The museum houses around 3,000 ceramic pieces in its collection, with a particular focus on Tamba ware alongside other historical Hyogo ceramics such as Mita ware and Izushi ware. The collection includes both ancient works and contemporary ceramic art from Japan and international sources. A significant portion comprises the Hiroshi Tanaka Collection, with 657 items designated as Important Tangible Cultural Properties by Hyogo Prefecture in 2018. The facility features three floors of exhibition galleries and hosts four special exhibitions annually showcasing ceramics from around the world. Beyond display spaces, the complex includes a workshop building where visitors can participate in pottery-making classes ranging from beginner to advanced levels, a restaurant, and a community showroom.

The museum grounds offer a scenic experience with nature-inspired architecture nestled among forests and overlooking the valley where dozens of active potteries continue the Tambayaki tradition. Visitors can view the nearby Tambayaki Tachikui Climbing Kiln, built in 1895, which remains the oldest functioning climbing kiln for Tamba pottery and stretches 47 meters with nine firing chambers. At dusk, ceramic lamps illuminate the museum gardens, creating an atmospheric setting.

Travelers reach the museum from Aino Station on the JR Fukuchiyama Line, which is approximately 50 minutes from Osaka Station. From Aino Station, the Shinki Green Bus bound for Hyogo Togei Bijutsukan or Konda Yakushi Onsen takes about 15 minutes and costs 310 yen. Alternatively, taxis from the station require roughly 10 minutes. Admission fees vary depending on exhibitions, with typical charges around 600 yen for special exhibitions, while some areas remain free to enter. The museum provides free parking and facilities including restrooms and an on-site tea room available for formal tea ceremonies with advance reservations.
