National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, known as Miraikan, is located in the Odaiba waterfront district of Koto Ward, Tokyo. Established in 2001 under the Japan Science and Technology Agency, the museum promotes public understanding of cutting-edge science and technology. The founding director was astronaut Mamoru Mohri, who served with NASA and JAXA. The seven-story building houses exhibitions on robotics, artificial intelligence, earth sciences, and space exploration.

The museum serves as Japan's premier public science communication facility through interactive learning experiences addressing climate change, sustainability, medical innovation, and technological ethics. Regular demonstrations feature advanced robotics, and the museum displays Geo-Cosmos, a suspended sphere showing real-time global environmental data and planetary imagery. The facility explores how emerging technologies shape society, reflecting Japan's technological innovation leadership.

Interactive exhibitions span multiple floors. Geo-Cosmos, measuring 6 meters in diameter in the central atrium, displays Earth and celestial imagery using over 10 million LEDs. Permanent exhibitions cover internet infrastructure, artificial intelligence, robotics, space exploration, and cellular biology. Regular robot presentations and science shows are conducted by staff. A dome theater presents planetarium programs and educational films. Hands-on laboratory workshops offer experimental activities with advance registration often required.

Take the Yurikamome Line to Telecom Center Station (4-minute walk) or Fune-no-Kagakukan Station (5-minute walk). The Rinkai Line serves Tokyo Teleport Station, approximately 15 minutes' walk away. Direct buses operate from Tokyo Station. Travel from central Tokyo takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Admission is ¥630 for adults and ¥210 for children aged 18 and under, with separate fees for special exhibitions and dome theater.
