Rokko Shidare Observatory

Rokko Shidare Observatory sits at the highest point of the Rokko Garden Terrace complex on Mount Rokko, at an altitude of 888 metres, overlooking the city of Kobe, Japan. It opened on July 13, 2010, and was designed by Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, whose work is guided by the principle that architecture should become a natural extension of the earth. Sambuichi drew inspiration from the mountain's extreme winters and the many forms that water takes across the four seasons, using these conditions as the foundation of the building's design and function.

The structure itself is a dome built from interlocking hexagonal frames, designed to collect frost in winter, giving it the appearance of a tree covered in icy leaves. Rather than simply framing an outward view, the observatory is intended to make visitors conscious of nature's cycles. In summer, ice harvested during winter is stored in underground chambers and used to cool the interior without electricity, keeping the temperature around 20 degrees Celsius even during the hottest months — roughly 10 degrees cooler than downtown Kobe. This passive cooling system, combined with the scent of Hinoki cypress throughout the structure, gives the visit a sensory dimension beyond the visual.

The panoramic view from the observatory stretches across Awaji Island, the Osaka Plain, and Kansai International Airport. The night view of Osaka Bay is widely referred to as the "ten-million-dollar night view" and is considered one of the three best night views in Japan. An annual illumination event, "Lightscape in Rokko", directed by light artist Masayuki Fushimi, runs through most of the year with rotating seasonal themes, making the observatory particularly popular after sunset. Inside, visitors can also engage with interactive art installations, including works by contemporary word artist Ichihara Hiroko.

To reach the observatory, take a bus from either JR Rokkomichi Station (Bus 16 or 26, ¥210, 20-minute ride) or Hankyu Rokko Station (Bus 16 or 26, ¥210, 14 minutes) to Rokko Cable Shita Station. From there, the Rokko Cable Car ascends to Rokko Sanjo Station in 10 minutes (¥600 one-way, ¥1,100 round trip), and the Rokko Sanjo Bus to Rokko Garden Terrace takes a further 10 minutes at ¥260. Hikers may also begin on foot from JR Rokkomichi, JR Ashiya, Hankyu Rokko, or Hankyu Ashiyagawa stations.
