시모쓰이는 옛부터 해운으로 번성한 마을입니다만, 특히 키타마에선이 전성기였던 에도 시대 후반(18세기 후반 이후)부터 메이지 30년경까지는 오카야마에서 가장 번창한 마을이었다고 해도 과언이 아니다고 생각합니다. 당시의 번영만은 현재도 남아있는 몇 개의 낙지 벽의 토장을 옹기하는 미야시키의 거리에서 엿볼 수 있도록 생각합니다.
에도시대 말기부터 크게 사업을 발전시킨 복선 도매상인 다카마쓰야(현재의 「무카시 시모쓰이 복선 도매상」)는 메이지기에 서양 범선을 포함해 십정을 넘는 북쪽 전선을 갖고 있었습니다만, 다른 호쿠리쿠 등의 선주의 배도 합치면 연간 80척 정도는 시모즈 소금이나 면 등 오카야마의 특산품을 일본해측의 도호쿠나 홋카이도에 내려가는 편으로 보내, 돌아오기의 업의 편에서는 면등의 비료가 되는 가가미등을 쌓아 왔습니다.
