Tsubame Onsen

Tsubame Onsen is a small hot spring village located in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, nestled in the mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters. The area has been known for its therapeutic waters since the Edo period, when it served travelers crossing the mountainous routes of central Japan. The name "Tsubame," meaning swallow, is said to derive from a legend about an injured swallow that healed its wounds in the hot spring waters.

The onsen is renowned for its milky white sulfur springs, which emerge naturally from the mountain slopes at temperatures reaching 50-60 degrees Celsius. These waters are classified as acidic sulfur springs and are believed to benefit skin conditions, muscle fatigue, and respiratory ailments. The settlement consists of several traditional ryokan inns, some of which have been operated by the same families for generations, maintaining the rustic atmosphere characteristic of remote mountain onsen villages.

Visitors come to Tsubame Onsen primarily for the authentic bathing experience offered by its outdoor rotenburo baths, many of which provide views of the surrounding beech forests and mountain scenery. The village is particularly popular during autumn, when the forest canopy transforms into brilliant shades of red and gold, typically peaking in mid-October. In winter, the area receives heavy snowfall, creating a dramatic landscape and allowing guests to experience snow bathing. Several ryokan offer day-use bathing privileges for non-staying guests, though advance reservation is recommended during peak seasons.

The nearest access point is Myoko Kogen Station on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway line, approximately 30 minutes by bus from the onsen. From Tokyo, visitors can take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsumyoko Station and transfer to local trains, with the total journey taking roughly three hours. During certain seasons, particularly winter, bus service may be limited and some ryokan provide shuttle services by arrangement. Day-use bathing at most facilities costs between ¥700-1,500, while overnight stays at traditional inns typically start around ¥12,000-15,000 per person including meals.
