You must possess the following:

1. For Japanese and foreign nationals living in Japan, a valid license issued there is required.

2. For overseas nationals who are not residents of Japan, you need your Passport, valid local driver's license, and International Driving Permit

3. Only the International Driving Permit (IDP) issued by a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention is recognized as valid for driving in Japan.

4. Nationals from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan can drive if a Japanese driving license translation is available. Please get in touch with us a month in advance if you need assistance.

5. U.S. Forces can drive with a SOFA Permit (USFJ 4E-J), a state driver's license, and an Active-Duty Uniformed Military ID.
