Akasaka Hikawa Shrine

Akasaka Hikawa Shrine stands as one of Tokyo's most historically significant Shinto shrines, established in 951 CE during the Heian period. The shrine was relocated to its current location in Akasaka in 1659 by the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, who designated it as a place of worship for the ruling family. The main buildings were reconstructed in 1730 under the eighth shogun Yoshimune, and remarkably, these Edo period structures survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II bombings, making them some of Tokyo's few remaining pre-modern shrine buildings.

The shrine holds particular cultural importance as it enshrines Susanoo-no-mikoto, the Shinto deity of storms and the sea, along with his wife and son. Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is renowned throughout Japan for its matchmaking powers, attracting couples and singles seeking blessings for love and marriage. The shrine's monthly good fortune day on the 15th draws especially large crowds. The complex features beautiful traditional architecture, including vermillion torii gates and intricately carved wooden structures that represent some of the finest examples of mid-Edo period craftsmanship.

Visitors can participate in traditional Shinto rituals, purchase omamori protective charms, and write wishes on wooden ema plaques. The shrine's peaceful grounds provide a tranquil escape from Tokyo's urban intensity, with ancient trees creating a natural canopy over stone pathways. Photography is permitted in most areas, though flash photography inside buildings is prohibited. The shrine hosts various festivals throughout the year, with traditional music and dance performances during special occasions.

Spring brings cherry blossoms to the shrine grounds, making it a popular hanami spot for locals. Summer festivals in July and August feature traditional music and food stalls. Autumn transforms the shrine with colorful maple leaves, while winter offers a serene snow-covered landscape and New Year celebrations that attract thousands of visitors for hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year.

The shrine is located in Minato ward and is most easily accessed via Akasaka-mitsuke Station on the Ginza and Marunouchi subway lines, requiring a 3-minute walk. Alternative access points include Nagatacho Station on the Yurakucho, Hanzomon, and Namboku lines, approximately 5 minutes on foot. The shrine is open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM with no admission fee, though donations are welcome. The shrine office operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for those seeking formal prayers or purchasing charms.
