Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, and revolutionized modern zoo design through its innovative behavioral exhibition approach. Originally a struggling municipal zoo that nearly closed in the 1990s, it transformed under director Masao Kosuge into Japan's most visited zoo by focusing on natural animal behaviors rather than static displays. The zoo's success influenced zoos worldwide and helped establish Asahikawa as a major tourist destination in northern Japan.

The zoo's cultural significance lies in its pioneering "behavioral enrichment" philosophy, allowing visitors to observe animals acting naturally through specially designed enclosures. The penguin walk program, initiated in 1997, became internationally famous as hundreds of king penguins waddle along designated paths during winter months. This approach demonstrates Japanese innovation in animal welfare and environmental education, making the zoo a model for modern zoological practices globally.

Key attractions include the seal tunnel, where visitors walk through an underwater tube as seals swim overhead, and the polar bear enclosure featuring a massive swimming pool with underwater viewing areas. The penguin house offers both summer and winter viewing experiences, while the wolf forest and Hokkaido brown bear exhibits showcase regional wildlife. The red panda and snow leopard habitats demonstrate the zoo's commitment to species conservation through naturalistic environments.

Seasonal variations dramatically affect the visitor experience. Winter months from December to March feature the famous penguin walks when temperatures drop below 5°C. Summer provides optimal viewing for most animals, though penguin walks cease during warmer weather. Spring offers comfortable weather and active animals, while autumn features beautiful foliage and moderate crowds before winter preparations begin.

Asahiyama Zoo is located 15 kilometers east of central Asahikawa. Regular buses run from JR Asahikawa Station to the zoo, taking approximately 40 minutes. The zoo operates from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM during summer season and 10:30 AM to 3:15 PM in winter. Adult admission costs ¥1,000, with children ¥400. The facility closes on April 8-28 annually for maintenance. Visitors should plan 3-4 hours for a complete visit and dress warmly during winter months when temperatures can reach -20°C.

What other travelers are saying about Asahikawa City Asahiyama Zoo

12 nov 2025 This zoo is very well-managed exhibition and each zones even if it’s not enormous zoo but spacious. They exhibits each animals in the closest way. I liked polar bear the most. The zoo shows me how big is it which it’s very close but safe. Seals are cute and really active. Male lion is impressive me because this is my first time to hear lion’s roar. Leopard is sitting above my head and beware of its pee. Close time is 15:30 in winter, so we cannot access to all zones. We chose to skip pet zone and monkey and walked directly and quickly to Ezo fox and Tanuki zone. Tanuki (raccoon dogs) are hiding under their nest, but the zoo is well-managed display which we can see them even they are sleeping inside. Even this zoo is not enormous but it’s very great and impressive zoo. Ticket 1000 yen is so cheap and really worth to pay.

The penguin walk was cool along with seeingna polar bear. Was extremely busy with people for the penguin walk then dropped off markedly about 1 hr after that. Was glad we took our time so the crowd really thinned out making it a better experience. Caught the 9:40 bus arrived at 10:10. Waited 20 minutes for the gate to open. Caught the return bus at 1:40. Was glad we arrived at the stop across from the zoo about 20 minutes before the bus. Was a good call as seats were limited so lots of people were standing for the ride home. Made lots of stops in the return trip but none on the outward bound trip. Was worth the visit. Bus fair 1000rt & entrance fee 1000 per person. Bought tickets at the zoo office Asahaikawa JR station. Was glad we went.

Beautiful and exotic zoo! Definitely saw animals I wouldn't have elsewhere. The animals aren't too excited as you'd imagine in zoos nowadays, but still mesmerising. Some of them had this weird back and forth pace that seemed robotic, so most likely are trained to follow a route in their enclosures for all visitors to witness

This zoo should be made part of any tourist's itinerary. It is worthy. It is winter hence the entire zoo was covered with snow. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Penguins, polar bear, sea lions as well as the fierce animals (Siberian tiger, lions, wolfs) as the zoo refers to them were pretty happy. You can get quite close to the animals if they do strut up to the fence. Only downside is some animals were evidently very cold in this weather e.g. the chimpanzees. There were 4 in the open and we could see some shivering and huddled at the side to shield the winter coldness. Zoo compound was easy to walk tho it gets slippery at certain parts. Eatery is available and serve hot meals and drinks. This was really a good option for visitors seeking solace from the below freezing point temperatures.

We went after a big snow storm so many animals had lots of snow inside. Nice staff. Great to see the penguins walk at 11am and 2.30pm. Food shop closes early at 3pm in winter. Very nice place must visit.
