What other travelers are saying about D & DEPARTMENT KYOTO d Shokudo Kyoto
This is one of those rare places where the atmosphere becomes part of the meal. Tucked inside a quiet temple compound, this restaurant offers a peaceful escape from crowded Kyoto streets. The moment you step inside, the warm wooden interior, tatami flooring, and soft natural light set the tone for a slow, calming dining experience.
We chose our hotel partly because of this restaurant—and we’re glad we did. From our seats, we looked out at a gentle view of falling ginkgo leaves. It felt like time slowed down. No rush, no noise, just a simple, beautiful moment.
The food itself leans toward home-style Japanese cooking—seasonal, comforting, and presented with quiet elegance. Not fancy, not flashy, but deeply satisfying. A balance of flavours that feels honest and thoughtful.
What stood out most was the atmosphere. Watching the leaves fall while enjoying a warm meal was exactly the kind of peaceful moment we had been longing for during this trip. After eating, we ended up staying almost two hours, playing with the fallen leaves and watching children run around the temple courtyard.

Loved the meal here. Had the chicken bowl and the set meal.
It was just outstanding. Loved the food and service. They have a vintage sake which is great and must try. Super yummy food
Lovely healthy foodquiet atmosphere with a retty view of the monastery courtyard, best dry curry ever (depth of flavors remarquable) and strange but interesting gluten set meal and weirdly delicious udon noodles with amazing tofu. The yuzu desert was delicious. A truly remarquable meal well worth going to. Also we learned about the the D department project with local sustainable sourced products and their magazine that gives a load of cl adresses where to go.
This was a real find.
Went to the shop and bought a beautiful scarf and sound bowl made in Kyoto. I will definitely go back
This was one of the best Japanese cuisine that I had during my time in Japan. The restaurant is located inside of a temple, and the food was just sooo delicious - will definitely come again
Also had a great vegetarian menu, which I can definitely recommend
Great selection of Japanese sweet. Real local authentic. Great curated drinks. Really want to try out their alcohol selection but didn’t have much time.
We went on Sunday so we spend a little time for waiting but its worth a wait. The atmosphere was so good. We sat on a comfy chair over the tatami mat. Really enjoyable+cosy to had nice sweet and enjoy the view outside.
I had the red bean mochi soup set and my mom had the red bean sandwich cracker. The taste was just right. The tea also comes with quality. The staff also very energetic and friendly.
