What other travelers are saying about Former British Consulate of Hakodate
A charming slice of Hakodate’s international past – peaceful garden, lovely roses, and nostalgic details
The Former British Consulate of Hakodate is such a beautiful and peaceful stop in Motomachi. The building itself is full of character — white walls, bright blue windows, and autumn ivy climbing across the facade. It feels like a little piece of Europe sitting quietly in Hokkaido.
The garden outside is surprisingly lovely, even in late autumn. There are roses still blooming in soft pinks and yellows, carefully shaped pine trees, and a gorgeous old fountain with swan sculptures. On a sunny day, the whole space feels calm and romantic — a perfect little walk before or after exploring the heritage area.
Inside, the tea room is cosy and charming, with vintage teapots, lace-edged tablecloths, and a nostalgic atmosphere. You can peek through the old windows and see people enjoying afternoon tea ‒ it feels like a moment frozen in time.
Small details make this place even sweeter: the antique brass doorknob, the rose soft-cream sign at the entrance, and even tiny love charms tied to the garden lattice.
A lovely and gentle stop where history, architecture, and nature blend together beautifully. Worth visiting for the garden alone, and even more if you enjoy heritage buildings and quiet moments.
The Former British Consulate of Hakodate is a restored 19th-century diplomatic building that served as Britain's official consulate in Hakodate from 1859 to 1934. It now operates as a museum showcasing the history of British-Japanese relations and life during Japan's opening to international trade. The building features period-furnished rooms, historical exhibitions, and a traditional British rose garden with views over Hakodate Bay.
The consulate is located in the Motomachi district, approximately 2 kilometers from Hakodate Station. Take the streetcar to Suehirocho Station and walk about 5 minutes uphill. Buses also serve the area with stops near the consulate. The location is easily combined with other historic sites in Motomachi, including the Russian Orthodox Church and Old Public Hall, all within walking distance.
Admission to the Former British Consulate costs ¥300 for adults. Reduced rates are available for students and children. The ticket includes access to all exhibition rooms, the consul's restored living quarters, and the surrounding rose garden.
Visitors can explore the consul's office, reception rooms, and living quarters furnished in Victorian-era style, view exhibitions on British-Japanese diplomatic history with original photographs and documents, and stroll through the English rose garden. The on-site tearoom serves traditional English afternoon tea with scones and tea, allowing guests to experience British hospitality in an authentic historical setting while enjoying harbor views.
The British-style rose garden surrounding the consulate is most spectacular from June through September when the roses are in full bloom. During this period, visitors can enjoy colorful floral displays combined with panoramic views of Hakodate Bay and the surrounding historic district, making it an ideal time for photography and leisurely garden walks.
combine ticket with the city hall
small interesting museum
lots of fussy little bits make up
for the small size and indescript building
Personal touch to add a throne seat you can take pictures
the selfie stands are a nice touch
Not really worth your time. Ancient 2 story house that was nicely preserved but many monuments were replicated not original. Two floors to explore. Ample Paid parking behind the location by cash payment.
Very insightful museum and great exhibits, it isn't very big, so takes maybe 30-50 minutes to tour. Has a shop and tearoom as well and many interesting facts on Japan and trade opening with the British as well as Hakodate and its history as a port. Recommend buying the combo tickets where you can visit 2,3 or 4 of the museums near each other.
Excellent piece of preserved history! I was pleasantly surprised at the level of detail and effort put into the building and its amenities so well done to the staff!
The cafe is also a must for tea and biscuits aficionados that proves a welcome lunch time respite!
