Fukiware Falls

Fukiware Falls is located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and stands as a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The waterfall earned recognition as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls by the Ministry of Environment. The dramatic landscape formed through 13 million years of volcanic rock erosion, with the current waterfall structure developing over the past 10,000 years through gradual water erosion of softer bedrock sections.

The waterfall's impressive 7-meter height and 30-meter width create a distinctive V-shaped formation where water cascades into a deep rocky gorge. The name "Fukiware" translates to "blown apart," describing the appearance of massive rocks split by natural forces. This powerful display has earned the falls the nickname "Niagara of the East", attracting thousands of visitors annually to witness this geological phenomenon.

The primary viewing experience centers on the suspension bridge that spans the gorge, providing optimal perspectives of the cascading waters below. Visitors can explore forest walking paths through Katashina Ravine that lead to various viewpoints along the waterfall's edge. The nearby Oigami Onsen hot springs are situated just 4 kilometers from the falls, offering convenient access to traditional Japanese bathing facilities. Autumn represents peak visitation when surrounding forests display vibrant fall colors throughout the valley.

Access from Tokyo requires taking the JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Jomo-Kogen Station in approximately 75 minutes. From there, visitors board a bus bound for Oze Tokura, disembarking at Fukiware no Taki Bus Stop followed by a short walk to the falls. Total travel time from Tokyo averages 2 hours and 30 minutes. By automobile, take the Kanetsu Expressway to Numata Interchange, then follow National Route 120 toward Nikko or Oze for approximately 30 minutes. The falls are located 16 kilometers from Numata IC.

Entry to the waterfall area is free of charge, with parking available for approximately ¥300. The site closes during winter months from mid-December through March due to snow conditions and safety concerns. Visitors should wear appropriate non-slip footwear as rocks near the waterfall can be wet and hazardous.
