What other travelers are saying about Goryokaku Park
Goryokaku Park is one of those places in Hakodate that quietly earns its reputation the moment you step inside. Built around Japan’s first Western-style star fort, the park blends history and nature in a way that feels both grand and relaxing. Even without knowing its past, the unusual star-shaped layout immediately catches your attention, making every walk through the park feel a little different from the usual city stroll.
In spring, Goryokaku Park transforms into one of Hokkaido’s most iconic cherry blossom spots. Hundreds of sakura trees line the moats and pathways, creating soft tunnels of pink that reflect beautifully on the water. It’s lively during peak bloom, but there are still calm corners where you can sit, slow down, and simply enjoy the season. Outside spring, the park remains equally appealing, with fresh greenery in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and a quiet, snow-covered charm in winter.
What makes Goryokaku Park especially memorable is how effortlessly it combines leisure with learning. Walking the paths gives you glimpses of the fort’s historical significance during the final days of the Edo period, while nearby Goryokaku Tower offers a breathtaking aerial view that reveals the perfect star shape in full. Whether you’re there for a picnic, a casual walk, photography, or history, the park adapts to your pace.
The best time to visit Goryokaku Park is during the cherry blossom season, which typically occurs from late April to early May. This is when the park's over 1,000 cherry trees are in full bloom, creating a breathtaking scenery. However, the park is also beautiful in other seasons, offering different scenic views.
Goryokaku Park is accessible by public transportation from Hakodate Station. You can take a tram to the Goryokaku-dori Station and walk for about 10 minutes to reach the park. Alternatively, buses that stop closer to the park are also available.
The park is open 24 hours, but the best time to visit is during daylight hours to fully enjoy its beauty. Goryokaku Tower has specific opening hours, generally from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but these can vary depending on the season.
Yes, picnicking is allowed and even encouraged, especially during the cherry blossom season. Many visitors enjoy hanami (flower viewing) picnics under the cherry trees. Please remember to take your trash with you to keep the park clean.
Pets are allowed in the park as long as they are kept on a leash, and their waste is properly disposed of. Owners are expected to be considerate of other visitors.
I enjoyed the walk here and found it peaceful and calming. I do wish there were more seats available for people to sit and rest. The scenery was beautiful too. When I looked at the clouds, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath—it made my heart feel calm and soothed. The walking area isn’t very big; if you stroll slowly, it might take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
You can also see the long shadow cast by the majestic tower—if you’re there at the right time, it’s truly a striking sight.
During my third visit to this location, I was captivated by its remarkable beauty throughout the year. This winter season, the river surrounding the castle was frozen, creating a serene and picturesque scene. The snow-laden trees added an enchanting touch to the amethyst, enhancing its allure.
20260207 - back again during sapporo winter festival week and came back to hakodate using jr pass to catch the star illumination!
20250502 - came here just in time to catch the cherry blossom at full bloom. There are so many cherry blossom trees in and around the park and photos taken near blossom trees and far away from goryokaku tower look amazing!
Free, convenient and absolutely stunning. I read negative reviews here from people that think it’s boring. Not sure I understand this. It’s a park and one of the most stuffing parks in autumn fall. Thank you!
