Kirarium Sado Gold Mine

Kirarium Sado serves as the official information center and gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sado Island Gold Mines, which achieved this prestigious designation in July 2024. Located in Aikawa on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, this modern facility provides comprehensive introduction to over 400 years of gold mining history since the mine was opened by the Edo Shogunate in 1601. The center showcases the mining heritage that made Sado one of Japan's most significant gold production sites for centuries.

The facility features detailed exhibitions covering the complete mining process from extraction to the production of koban gold coins, along with digital archives and interactive displays. Digital archives and guide apps are available in English, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Korean. Visitors can explore dioramas illustrating traditional mining techniques and learn about the three major mining areas: Nishimikawa Placer Gold Mine (early 11th century - 1872), Tsurushi Silver Mine (1542-1946), and Aikawa Gold and Silver Mine (1596-1989). The center also provides tourist information and arranges guided tours to various mining sites across the island.

Kirarium Sado is only 10 minutes by car from the main gold mine site, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the broader mining complex. The facility serves as a base for visiting related historic sites including the Kitazawa Flotation Plant and the Sado Bugyosho Commissioner's Office ruins. Visitors can collect commemorative stamps at various mining locations throughout their journey.

To reach Sado Island, travelers must take ferries from mainland Japan. From Tokyo, take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu Myoko Station (around two hours, about 9,000 yen one way) and transfer to a local train to Naoetsu Station (15 minutes, 340 yen one way). From Naoetsu, Sado Kisen operates two ferries per day to Ogi on Sado Island from late April to mid November, with the one way journey taking 160 minutes and costing around 3,000 yen. Once on the island, 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day bus passes are available at ¥1,500, ¥2,500, and ¥3,000 respectively.

Admission costs ¥300 for adults and is free for elementary and junior high school students. The facility includes tourist information services, restroom facilities, and no advance booking is required for general visits.
