What other travelers are saying about Miyako City Gyosai Market
Probably the main attraction of the town, with a selection of fresh sea food (crabs, mussels, oysters, fish) and a grocery store. Also a few stalls which sold knives and other kitchen ware, and a stationary shop.
The market operates from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM daily. It is closed every Wednesday. If you're planning a visit, particularly on a cruise tour, note that when Wednesday closures conflict with scheduled excursions, alternative arrangements may be made to visit nearby facilities such as Michi no Eki Miyako instead.
Yes. The market reopened in March 2019 with a new barbecue corner where visitors can grill seafood, meat, and vegetables purchased directly from market vendors. This allows you to enjoy the freshest Sanriku seafood prepared to your liking immediately after purchase. The cafeteria inside the market also serves rice bowls and set meals featuring fresh local seafood if you prefer prepared meals.
Bring local currency as many vendors at traditional markets in Japan do not accept credit cards. Cash is strongly recommended for purchases at Miyako City Gyosai Market, particularly at individual stalls and smaller vendors. While some establishments in Japan accept cards, smaller local markets and family-run businesses typically operate on a cash-only basis.
The market is located approximately a 10-minute walk north of Miyako Station on the Sanriku Railway line. If you're driving, parking is available for 3 large vehicles and 140 regular cars. The market is easily accessible as it's situated in the central area of Miyako City.
Yes. The market offers packaging and shipping services for purchases you'd like to send as souvenirs. This is particularly convenient for fresh seafood and local specialties that you want to share with family and friends but cannot carry with you during your travels. Staff can assist with arranging shipments directly from the market.
cleanest fish market I've been to in Japan so far! Japanese fish market is already relatively clean . But this place is by far the cleanest! Small but for really fresh and good food here! Best time to come here in summer for Uni (sea urchin) the sold in a bottle!!
Clean and Fresh Seafood! I’ve been driving from Iwate to Aomori and find fresh seafood to eat near Jodogahama Beach and found this supermarket. They have lots of parking lot and many local visit here, a bit crowded in rush hour.
They have fresh food zone, supermarket and restaurant zone. At first we gonna try the Donburi restaurant but they’ve long queue so we change to grilled seafood restaurant nearby instead. You need to choose and buy fresh seafood and prepare ingredients by yourself at the restaurant, they have all equipment you need like for cleaning, cut and eat. Rice and drink can buy from supermarket.
Then we grilled all ingredients on the stove that provided. You don’t need any sauce or just a few because seafood is sweet and fresh. Hotate is unexpected it’s so big! and sweet. Even their dried Shima Hokke fish is superbbb.
It’s a awesome experience and good seafood, need to try if you travel here
A fun place with all sorts of fresh fish and epic huge fresh oysters that were great value at ¥300 a pop. There’s tables to sit down inside so you can eat whatever you buy right there.
