The Tokyo Chapter's "Curated for Families" Japan Itinerary

I have created this three week Japan itinerary as I want to share our favourite things to do in Japan as a family. I like to focus on special slow travel moments with that perfect mix of old and new Japan. Within this itinerary, I make sure to weave in playground "wriggle time" and little niche experiences that you may not have known about before travelling to Japan. I also believe that meal times are an important part of the Japan plan -food experiences* in Japan can open little and big eyes to so much about Japan as a country but also cultural differences and even some small Japanese language opportunities. *I have also included as many "picky eater" alternatives as possible while drafting out this itinerary for families. My tip if you have super dooper fussy eaters ? Feed kids what they want to eat for an early dinner first and then take them with you to the restaurant that the adults want to try and order the kids rice, fries or dessert and give them some colouring or sticker books from the 100 yen shop so the grown ups have a chance to indulge. EVERY restaurant I mention in this itinerary welcomes children. Feel free to chop and change this itinerary to suit your travel needs and budget or even just take on one day of one city in particular. Ok. Well! I'm so excited for you to let me boss you around and make your Japan family holiday easier and even more magical ! *in order to make moving around as easy as possible - I recommend using the luggage forwarding system in Japan for every second hotel and moving with just carry on luggage while on the bullet train etc* (I have links how to do this through the itinerary.)

Japan in a week: Tokyo → Kanazawa → Osaka

A trip Beyond the golden route: You're planning a trip to Japan? you're coming in spring for cherry blossoms or winter for magical snow? I have set up this 7‑day route gives you the best mix of Japan’s iconic cities and one of its most underrated gems: Kanazawa. I have done this route myself so I will make sure link all the recommendations with my social media posts. Your journey starts in Tokyo, where modern architecture, ancient shrines, style, and incredible food set the tone. After exploring Japan’s vibrant capital (and optional day trips to Hakone or Kamakura), you’ll head to Kanazawa, a compact, beautifully preserved cultural city that feels like Kyoto but without the crowds! phew! All incredibly walkable, serene, and perfect for travelers who want culture without rush. From there, the trip continues to Osaka, Japan’s food capital, where neon streets, markets, and castle views wrap up the perfect week, before returning to Tokyo for your flight home. This itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors, couples, and anyone curious to experience Japan beyond the usual Tokyo–Kyoto track, while still enjoying classic highlights. Kanazawa truly surprised me, and I’m excited to share this full journey with you. Itinerary at a Glance Day 1 : Tokyo Arrival & First Impressions Day 2: Tokyo Icons: Shrines, Style & City Life Day 3: Tokyo Day Trip (Hakone or Kamakura) → Travel to Kanazawa Day 4: Kanazawa: Gardens, Castles & Samurai Streets Day 5: Kanazawa: Art Museum, Tea District & Nostalgic Cafés → Osaka Day 6: Osaka: Street Food, Castles & Neon Nights (Optional Nara) Day 7: Osaka → Tokyo → Departure
