What other travelers are saying about Myogi Shrine
Really enjoyed the architecture at this shrine, beautifully carved, colored and maintained. The shrine ground is built on the side of a mountain, so expect lots of steps to reach the upper shrine. It takes about 30 mins to complete a visit but spend the most time at the upper shrine! As that is the most detailed area, starting from its entrance gate.
Autumn, particularly late October to early November, is the most popular time to visit when the mountain's foliage displays vibrant red and orange colors. Spring also attracts visitors for fresh greenery and mild temperatures suitable for hiking. Summer can be hot but offers lush landscapes, while winter provides clear views though some hiking trails may be icy or closed.
Mount Myogi offers trails for various skill levels. The lower trails around the shrine area are suitable for casual walkers, but the ascent to peaks like Nakano-dake involves steep sections with chains and ladders, requiring good fitness and proper footwear. Beginners should start with easier routes and assess their comfort level before attempting technical climbs.
A basic visit to the shrine grounds takes 30 to 45 minutes. If you plan to hike the lower trails, allow 2 to 3 hours. Climbing to the summit peaks requires 4 to 6 hours for a round trip, depending on your pace and chosen route. Most visitors spend half a day combining shrine exploration with moderate hiking.
Limited dining options exist directly at the shrine, though small shops may sell snacks and drinks. Visitors planning extended hikes should bring their own food and water. More restaurant options are available in Tomioka City or near Matsuida Station, making it advisable to eat before or after your shrine visit.
Yes, the shrine remains accessible year-round, though winter visits require preparation. Snow and ice can make paths slippery, and some higher mountain trails may be dangerous or closed. The shrine grounds themselves are manageable with appropriate footwear, and winter offers clear atmospheric conditions for photography, but serious hiking should be reserved for warmer months.
Beautiful shrine and location. There are several small shrines to go to leading up to the main shrine which are just as beautiful. A bit of a walk up but it’s short so I didn’t have a problem. There is parking right before the shrine entrance for ¥100.
Beautiful temple full of nature and traditional Japanese architectures! They synchronize really well with all things there! The myogi mountain background is also breathtaking scenery as well. Today was a bit rainy day but if you look out from the top of the place you’ll see the beautiful city of Takasaki!
The place is really clean so be respectful and keep it nice and cozy!
Come and enjoy!
Cheers 🥂
Wonderful place to visit specially during cherry blossom. From Matsuida Station, walk few minutes to this temple area. The temple itself is quite magnificent, and there are some nice cafes and even a museum in the surroundings. Past the temple, the hiking trail to Mount Myogi starts. The main path is a medium level hike (you can choose more demanding routes if that is what you want, with rocky hills and cliff to cross with chains). We did the hike but visiting only the temple was worth coming.
