What other travelers are saying about Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory
Stepping into Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory in Setagaya City feels like wandering straight into a Studio Ghibli film! As someone looking for an interesting and different lunch spot, this place delivered pure magic. The Totoro cream puffs are every bit as adorable as they look in the pictures, almost too cute to eat. I had the Custard flavor (just like the one pictured!) and it was not only incredibly charming but also deliciously light and creamy. The entire cafe upstairs exudes a whimsical Ghibli charm, making it a truly unique and delightful place to enjoy a sweet and savory lunch. A must-visit for Ghibli fans and anyone seeking a truly special experience!
Please note, arrive early if you want as table as there can be a queue to enter. There's no queue for takeaways though.
Absolute cuteness overload! The Totoro cream puffs are as delicious as they are adorable. Excellent quality, with a lovely selection of seasonal flavors. Tucked away in a peaceful neighborhood, it’s a perfect little escape from the city buzz. Easily one of our favorite stops in Tokyo — 10/10!
The cutest Café ever with the cutest owner! We went on a Sunday in early September at 12:45 am (they open at 11 am) and there were still plenty of cream puffs left. I got the chocolate one & it was soo yummy!Definetely come here if you like Totoro :) (also the surrounding area is very cute & it‘s on the way to Gotokuji Temple if you‘re travelling from Shinjuku area)
What can I say? FANTASTIC, a place that breathes Studio Ghibli, with a special aura. The service, both at the café and especially at the pastry shop, was truly special. Although the cakes were so cute that we didn’t even want to eat them, we gave in to their perfect taste.❤️
I visited this pastry shop after seeing it on Instagram, drawn in by the adorable Studio Ghibli theme and it definitely delivered on the cuteness. The outside decor was charming and photogenic, and walking in felt magical. Once inside, you go upstairs to the café area, and on your way out (or if you’re just passing through), there’s a shop section downstairs where you can grab some takeaway treats or the pastries themselves.
I tried the mango cream pastry, and overall, I’d give it a 4 out of 5. The outer shell was surprisingly hard, which knocked off a star for me. It caught me off guard and made the texture a little less enjoyable. That said, the inside was perfect—light, airy, and had a refreshing, delicate flavor that didn’t overwhelm the palate. It felt like the kind of dessert you could slowly savor.
The staff were lovely, super friendly and welcoming. As for payment, both card and cash are accepted, but a few things to know:
If you’re paying with card, you’ll need to register it online.
The menu is online, so be ready to browse and order from your phone.
They do not split bills, so if you're with friends, bring cash or be ready to sort out payment yourselves.
Overall, it’s a cute experience with a cozy atmosphere, solid pastries (even if a bit firm on the outside), and totally worth a stop if you’re a Ghibli fan or just want a whimsical cafe moment.
You can purchase Totoro cream puffs without a reservation, but the shop produces only 200 pieces per day on a first-come, first-served basis. Each customer is typically limited to a reasonable number to ensure availability for other visitors. Queues often form 30 minutes before the 10:30 opening time, so arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends and holidays.
The ground floor bakery offers faster takeaway service where you can purchase cream puffs and other baked goods to go. The upstairs café provides table seating where you can enjoy your treats in a themed environment with Studio Ghibli décor and merchandise displays. The café typically has longer wait times but offers a more immersive dining experience.
The shop offers several cream filling varieties including custard cream, matcha (green tea) cream, and seasonal specialty flavors that change throughout the year. The custard and matcha varieties are the most popular, with cream designed to overflow slightly when bitten, creating the authentic Totoro experience that fans expect.
Take the Odakyu Line to Setagaya-Daita Station. The shop is located just a few minutes' walk from the station at 5-3-1 Daita, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo. The Setagaya district is residential and quieter than central Tokyo, making it a pleasant neighborhood to explore while visiting.
The factory does offer online ordering with delivery service within Japan, but availability is extremely limited and typically sells out quickly. International shipping is not available. For visitors from outside Japan, purchasing in-person at the Tokyo location remains the most reliable way to experience these officially licensed Studio Ghibli treats.
