What other travelers are saying about Takamori Dengaku no Sato
I went there with my husband, traditional Japanese charcoal grilling. Food was delicious, especially chicken and tofu skewer. Staff were friendly, but when I was there at 1730, toilet floor was flooded, it was fixed before I finished the meal. We spent approx 11000 yen.
I went there again on Jun 19, 2025 with my parents in law, my husband and my 6 month old son. Food was still very delicious. There is no air conditioning in summer days, but they provided quite a number of fans to ventilate and cool down. What’s even surprised me that they had set up a little bed for my baby to sleep while we enjoyed our food.
Visited at 6pm without reservation. The staffs can organize a table for us. It’s an unique experience to have grilled food like this. Food is delicious as well.
They have website to tech us how to enjoy the food in English , I really recommend you try chicken 🐓 the skin is crispy fresh
I like the fish and tofu also , you can buy their miso sauce ¥400 at the cashier, I got the citron one ♥️♥️
The staff they are friendly
Dengaku is a local farmer's cuisine - BBQ skewers with miso sauce。
This restaurant is one of the most popular Dengaku resto. Although we were served walk-in, apparently they work with reservations.
There are a few meal sets - Aka Beef course, Vegetarian course and a Chicken one. Appetizers, soups and standard BBQ skewers of Tofu and Konyaku were included with the courses.
We were shown a 'station' that required sitting on floor - which is quite a numbing experience for us City Folks, but its Well Worth it. The food is great, the experience is precious, the rustic atmosphere is magical and they really try to help out.
Aside from the Aka Beef don, I don't think anyone visiting MinamiAso should miss this experience and a hearty meal!
come here for the vibes (and you will smell like smoke after), the food is grilled on the sides so i feel like the fire was not super strong to cook through all the skewers. nonetheless, great meal and sauce but will note the meats, especially the chicken, were a bit on the tougher side
Yes, reservations are required and must be made minimum 1 day before your visit. This traditional restaurant operates in a historical setting and provides a unique dining experience where meals are prepared using traditional irori (hearth) cooking methods, which requires advance planning and preparation time.
The restaurant offers several course options including Aka Beef course, Vegetarian course and a Chicken course. The popular "dengaku set meal" costs 2,490 yen and consists of five types of dengaku: sweet potato vine, tofu, eggplant, konnyaku, and yamame (landlocked salmon). The Dengaku set meal costs 1980 yen, while the Aso popular set meal using Aso's red beef costs 3190 yen. Average price per person is approximately ¥3000.
Guests dine in a traditional 200-year-old thatched-roof farmhouse where they cook their own food over charcoal fires at their table. Seating requires sitting on the floor, which can be challenging for some visitors but is considered well worth the experience. Gloves are provided when flipping skewers over the charcoal grill to avoid burning hands, and staff provide close instruction for those unfamiliar with cooking over fire. The atmosphere is described as cozy, rustic, and authentically Japanese.
Dengaku is an old dish that originates from a dance called Dengaku Mai, which was performed by farmers to pray for a rich harvest. Takamori Dengaku features "Tsurunoko sweet potato" that can only be found in this area as the main dish - a kind of taro made in the barren land of volcanic ash by receiving the blessings of Mt. Aso. The dish uses local ingredients dipped in specially prepared dengaku miso containing various condiments and grilled over charcoal until fragrant.
The restaurant is located in a wooded area approximately 2.6 kilometers from Takamori Station. Opening hours vary depending on the season, with general hours from 10:00 to 18:00, but visitors should confirm current hours on the homepage. The establishment is non-smoking and the dining experience can take a considerable amount of time due to the traditional irori cooking method, so plan accordingly for your visit.
