What other travelers are saying about The Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden
This is an absolutely beautiful garden with flowers and plants from all over the world. There is a small interactive lab you can visit and an amazing outdoor area with beautiful scenery where you can walk around and take pictures. A must see in Kochi.
Beautiful place to walk around. It is quite large, and there are dozens of little paths that go off the main walkways into forests and gardens. One warning, however, as it is on the top of a hill, you will have to go up and down a lot of stairs and slopes to see much of what is here.
Worth a visit if you’re staying in or near Kochi. We were staying in Tosayama and were recommended to visit this place by our hosts. We didn’t have long however we were able to enjoy the glass house and main garden in a few hours but you could easily spend a whole day here. Beautifully maintained and informative
Fantastic place, well worth the visit. There is a temple complex next to the garden too. Make sure you have a local GO taxi app as it's very difficult to find transportation back.
It is very large so I would come again.
It takes time to both walk and observe the plants from the parking lot to the ticker gate (entrance). Walking only takes about 5 minutes, quite long.
Many plants commonly found in Shikoku and Japan were planted with description.
There was a building in which basic botanical knowledge was explained with illustrations, and even the history of botany (particularly related to Dr. Makino, a famous botanist of Japan).
I love the entrance building of the tropical house (see the last 2 photos) because it looked uninhabited and deserted building, somehow like the ones in Studio Ghibli's Laputa-Castle in the Sky.
I don't remember they had powder-puff tree but the glass lake was nice (we could see the underside of giant water lilies).
