What other travelers are saying about Tojogaoka Historical Park
Matsudo Tourist Information suggested to check out and visit Tojo Historical Park, it is free entrance unfortunately the museum was closed. Tojo-tie house has an entrance fee though. Did a quick tour of the spacious garden with lots of shrubbery, trees and bushes, refreshingly green and pleasant to look but the heat again was unbearable so left after awhile.
A beautiful and calm place with a high quality air index.
Entrance to the park is free.
There is an entrance fee for the museum and Tojo House.
It is not allowed to eat food or playing in garden
It's a beautiful historical building with a big, varied garden. On sunny clear days you can see Mt. Fuji in the distance. The original owner's information (the younger brother of the last shogun, who lived abroad as a child) is very interesting and there is a museum onsite dedicated to his story. I learned a lot about that period in history from the museum.
Also, at the bottom of the hill there area couple of good restaurants after your visit. One is the Thai restaurant, where I recommend not getting the set menu, because the food here is excellent but the set menu is kind of boring. The other is the traditional Soba place near the Lawson.
Beautiful park on the hill. Residence of the family home of Tokugawa Akitake, younger brother of the last of the Tokugawa shoguns.
Seasonal events and exhibitions are held. On the photo - chrysanthemum festival in Autumn.
An excellent garden (if it's a clear day you can see "half" Fuji , or at sunsets)
Inside gardens there are two museums, one history museum (changing regularly the exposition) and the second museum is a former house of a imperial family member. Don't miss a great place.
The park and its facilities are open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:30 PM. The park is closed on Mondays (or the following Tuesday if Monday is a national holiday) and during the New Year holiday period from December 28 to January 4. The museum occasionally closes for exhibition preparation periods. While the park grounds themselves are free to enter, the Tojo-tei House and museum require paid admission.
A combination ticket covering both Tojo-tei House and the museum costs ¥320 for adults, while visiting just the house is ¥250 and the museum alone is ¥150. High school and university students receive discounted rates. The park grounds can be accessed free of charge without entering the buildings. Group discounts are available for parties of 20 or more people.
The garden is normally viewed from the veranda of Tojo-tei House to protect the historic Meiji-era lawn. However, the garden is opened to the public for walking on the 10th of every month, allowing visitors to experience the landscape up close. The surrounding parkland has walking paths that remain accessible throughout operating hours where you can enjoy seasonal flowers and views of the Edo River.
The park is located 15 minutes on foot from Matsudo Station on the JR Joban Line. From Tokyo Station, take the JR Joban Line directly to Matsudo, which takes approximately 30 minutes. Alternatively, visitors can take a local bus from Matsudo Station that stops near the Tojo Museum of History entrance, followed by a short 3-minute walk. Since the park sits on a hilltop, some visitors prefer taking a taxi from the station for around ¥500.
Plum blossoms are at their best around late February, paying homage to Akitake's connection to Mito Domain, famous for its plum gardens. Cherry blossoms bloom throughout the park in spring, typically early April. Autumn foliage provides colorful views in November. The park's elevated position offers opportunities to see Mount Fuji on clear days, particularly in winter months when visibility is best.
