Yamagata Marugoto-kan Beni-no-kura

Yamagata Marugoto-kan Beni-no-kura is an integrated tourism complex located in the historic Tokamachi district of Yamagata City. The facility comprises the restored warehouses and residence of the Marutani Hasegawa family, prominent safflower merchants who established their trade during the Edo period (1603-1868). These structures, approximately 100 years old, feature distinctive architectural elements including open-timbered roofs and traditional paper doors that reflect the prosperity generated by Yamagata's safflower commerce, which was once valued as a premium export commodity throughout Japan.

Safflower cultivation formed the economic foundation of Yamagata during the Edo period, and the Hasegawa family's warehouses served as a commercial hub for processing and trading this valuable crop. The complex now operates under the management of the Yamagata City Urban Development Corporation with a mission to revitalize the downtown area while preserving regional heritage. The facilities showcase both historical architecture and contemporary interpretations of local culture through dining, retail, and informational services.

Visitors to Beni-no-kura can experience five distinct facilities within the complex. The soba restaurant Beni serves handmade buckwheat noodles prepared from local varieties including Dewakaori and Mogamiwase, following the traditional principle of grinding, kneading, and boiling immediately before service. An adjacent storehouse accommodates up to 30 guests for private gatherings.

The French-inspired restaurant 990 offers contemporary cuisine featuring locally sourced ingredients, presented in a modern dining space with high ceilings and large windows. The souvenir shop Agarasyai—a local dialect phrase meaning "please come in"—sells traditional crafts, regional sake, pickles, and confectionery within the atmospheric original storehouse. A tourist information center provides travel resources and offers free bicycle rentals from April to October. The direct sales market features fresh vegetables and fruits from Yamagata farmers, including heirloom varieties preserved through generations.

The complex is approximately 10 minutes on foot from Yamagata Station. The facility is open year-round with the exception of January 1, though individual shops maintain varying schedules. Admission to the complex and tourist information center is free, while restaurants and shops operate on standard commercial terms.
