Ekoda Sengen Shrine

Ekoda Sengen Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the Ekoda neighborhood of Nerima Ward, Tokyo. Established in 1782, the shrine was built atop an artificial mound constructed from soil excavated during the development of the nearby Shakujii River. The shrine is dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of Mount Fuji, and belongs to the Sengen shrine network that venerates this deity across Japan.

The shrine's most distinctive feature is its elevated position on Ekoda Fuji, a man-made hill approximately 8 meters high that served as a miniature replica of Mount Fuji. During the Edo period, when climbing the actual Mount Fuji was difficult for common people, these fujizuka mounds allowed worshippers to symbolically ascend the sacred mountain. Ekoda Fuji is considered one of the best-preserved examples of these structures in Tokyo and has been designated as a cultural property by Nerima Ward.

Visitors can climb the stone steps leading up the mound, which takes only a few minutes but offers a symbolic pilgrimage experience. The pathway is lined with traditional stone lanterns and small shrines. At the summit, the main shrine building provides views of the surrounding residential neighborhood. The shrine grounds are modest in size but maintain a peaceful atmosphere despite their urban setting. The annual festival held on July 1st attracts local residents and features traditional ceremonies.

The shrine is located approximately 7 minutes on foot from Ekoda Station, which is served by the Seibu Ikebukuro Line. From central Tokyo, take the Seibu Ikebukuro Line directly to Ekoda Station, with the journey taking roughly 15 minutes from Ikebukuro Station. The shrine is also accessible from Nakamurabashi Station on the same line. There is no admission fee to enter the shrine grounds or climb Ekoda Fuji. The shrine operates as a functioning place of worship, and visitors are expected to observe standard shrine etiquette.
