Entsuji Temple

Entsuji Temple is a small Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple located in the Nishikyo ward of Kyoto, established in 1678 during the early Edo period. The temple was founded by the aristocrat Konoe Fumihiro as a villa retreat before being converted into a Buddhist temple. It belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen and has maintained its quiet, contemplative atmosphere for over three centuries.

The temple is renowned for its borrowed scenery garden, or shakkei, which masterfully incorporates the distant Mount Hiei into its landscape design. This technique creates a seamless visual connection between the temple grounds and the surrounding mountains, making the natural landscape appear as an extension of the garden itself. The carefully framed view through the temple's main hall has become one of Kyoto's most photographed garden scenes, particularly during autumn when the maple trees display vibrant fall colors. The garden also features round windows that frame specific views, creating living paintings that change with the seasons.

Visitors experience Entsuji by viewing the garden from the tatami-matted main hall, where they can sit and contemplate the landscape in traditional Zen fashion. The temple grounds include azalea bushes that bloom in late spring and maple trees that create stunning autumn displays, typically peaking in mid to late November. Photography is permitted in most areas, though the temple requests visitors maintain a quiet, respectful atmosphere befitting its religious nature. The intimate size of the temple means crowds can affect the viewing experience, making early morning visits particularly recommended.

Entsuji Temple is located approximately 30 minutes by bus from central Kyoto. Take Kyoto City Bus 26 from Kyoto Station or the downtown Kawaramachi area to the Entsuji-michi stop, followed by a short walk. The temple charges an admission fee of ¥500 for adults. Due to its relatively remote location on the western outskirts of Kyoto, the temple receives fewer visitors than major tourist sites, offering a more peaceful experience despite its photogenic qualities.
