Kamogata Machiya Park

Kamogata Machiya Park is a historical preservation site in Asakuchi City, Okayama Prefecture, located along the Old Kamogata Orai road that connected the Edo period Okayama domain and the Kamogata branch domain. The park features two faithfully restored Edo period townhouses and three storehouses, along with a traditional botanical garden. It has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 historical parks, recognizing its cultural importance and preservation efforts.

The park's centerpiece is the Former Takato Family Residence, designated as an important cultural property of Okayama Prefecture. This structure is the oldest townhouse in Okayama Prefecture, built over 300 years ago. The historical site zone includes meticulously restored storehouses, wells, earthen walls, and traditional gardens that offer an authentic glimpse into merchant life during the Edo period. The landscape zone features a traditional botanical garden where visitors can observe seasonal classic plants, a lawn plaza, and an observatory.

Visitors can explore the original architecture of the merchant houses, examine the construction techniques and materials used over three centuries ago, and experience traditional Japanese residential design. The park hosts various cultural events throughout the year that allow guests to engage with traditional Japanese customs and crafts. The botanical garden provides a peaceful setting to appreciate native plant species arranged in classic Japanese garden style.

The park is located approximately 2 kilometers north from National Route 2 and JR Kamogata Station in the town of Kamogata.
