Little World Museum of the Outdoor Folklore

The Little World Museum of Man stands as the world's first open-air anthropological museum, opened in 1983 in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture. This groundbreaking institution was established after an extensive preparation period to create a unique cultural experience where visitors can explore authentic architecture and traditions from around the globe without leaving Japan. The museum represents a pioneering approach to anthropological education, combining academic research with accessible public engagement.

The museum showcases cultures from 23 countries across its expansive 123-hectare grounds, featuring buildings that were either relocated from their native countries or built in the style of those countries. Countries represented include France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Micronesia, Peru, Tanzania, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States. Many structures, such as traditional houses from France's Alsace region, have been painstakingly transported and reconstructed to maintain their authentic character and historical significance.

Visitors can explore the extensive grounds via a 2.5-kilometer circular road that connects all cultural zones. The museum offers an internal bus system with buses departing every 10 to 15 minutes, allowing guests to hop on and off at designated stops throughout the park. Beyond architectural exploration, the museum provides immersive cultural experiences including traditional costume rentals for France, Germany, Korea, and Okinawa, authentic cuisine from various cultures, and seasonal cultural festivals that bring each represented country's traditions to life.

The museum is located at 90-48 Imai-Narisawa, Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. Public transportation access is limited, with the facility being far from the city and not convenient with public transportation. The most practical approach is by car, though local bus services do operate to the area. Admission fees are structured by age: ¥2,200 for high school students and adults, ¥1,100 for elementary and junior high school students, and ¥500 for children aged 3 and older. A separate bus ticket costs ¥500 for unlimited rides within the park. Most visitors spend approximately 3-4 hours exploring the entire facility, making it suitable for a half-day cultural excursion.
