The pass is typically open from late April to mid-November each year. Due to Hokkaido's heavy snowfall, the route closes for winter, usually by mid-November, and reopens in late April when snow conditions permit. Weather conditions can affect these dates, so checking current road conditions before visiting is recommended.
Fall is considered the best time to visit when the ocean of green turns to fiery reds and yellows, typically from late September to early October. Summer months offer lush green forest views, while late May to June provides fresh spring foliage. Weather can be unpredictable at this elevation, so visitors should prepare for changing conditions.
The site includes parking areas and basic visitor amenities at the observatory platform itself. There aren't many places to eat along the pass itself, but nearby Nukabira Gensenkyo offers a few options with small inns and cafes that serve traditional Japanese fare like soba noodles. Visitors should bring water and snacks for the journey.
Access requires a private vehicle as the observatory is located on Route 273 between Kamishihoro and Sounkyo Onsen. Many visitors choose to begin in Kamishihoro to get the full experience of the ascent. Public transportation options are extremely limited, making rental cars the most practical option for tourists.
At 1,139 meters elevation, weather conditions can change rapidly and differ significantly from lower elevations. Temperatures are generally cooler than surrounding areas, and fog or clouds can obscure views. Even in summer, visitors should bring warm layers as mountain weather can be unpredictable, especially in early morning or late afternoon.
