Toi Gold Mine

The Toi Gold Mine stands as Japan's second most productive gold mine after Sado, located on the scenic Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. Small-scale gold mining began around 1370 during the Ashikaga shogunate, but the site gained prominence when Tokugawa Ieyasu expanded operations from 1601, transforming it into one of approximately 60 goldmines across the Izu Peninsula. During its operational period, the mine produced 40 tons of gold and 400 tons of silver, with galleries totaling about 100 kilometers in length over a surface of 37 hectares, extending as deep as 180 meters below sea level.

The mine holds exceptional cultural significance as a cornerstone of Tokugawa prosperity. The gold and silver produced by these mines permitted the production of Tokugawa coinage and allowed for the prosperity of the Tokugawa shogunate. Tokugawa Ieyasu put the exploitation of the mine under the responsibility of a Kinzan Bugyō selected from the Ōkubo clan, demonstrating its strategic importance to the ruling dynasty. The mine operated continuously until 1965 when it closed due to ore depletion.

Today's visitors experience the mine through a carefully restored 400 meter long mining tunnel featuring Japanese explanations and animatronic miners activated by motion sensors. The area visible for tourism is about 350m long and goes about 150 meters deep into mountain rock. The highlight attraction is the Gold Museum (Ogonkan), which houses the world's heaviest gold bar weighing 250 kilograms, officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records and valued at approximately 1.2 billion yen. Visitors can attempt to lift this massive gold bar and explore exhibits showcasing mining artifacts, dioramas of the gold manufacturing process, and various gold ores from across Japan.

The gold panning experience allows visitors to try their hand at traditional mining techniques. This indoor activity allows visitors to pan for as much gold as they can in 30 minutes and to take home their finds. Collect 30 or more pieces of gold and get certified as a "Gold panning master". Additional attractions include the Mountain Shrine with its golden torii gate and the Golden Water Source hot spring, both considered spiritual spots for attracting monetary fortune.

From Shuzenji Station, take a bus bound for Dogashima and get off at Toi Kinzan (50 minutes, 1680 yen one way, hourly). The gold mine is a few steps from the bus stop. By car, travel via Numazu IC on Tomei Expressway through Izu Longitudinal Expressway and coastal state road 136. Addmision cost 1000 yen (900 yen with online coupon) for tunnel tour and museum access. Separate 1000 yen for gold panning experience or 1600 for both admission and gold panning experience. The facility closes for 3-4 days during the second week of December annually.
