Unosato Visitor Center

The Unosato Visitor Center forms part of the Unosumai Tomosu complex that opened in March 2019 in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture. Located directly in front of Unosumai Station, this facility serves as a tourism and community hub within a larger memorial area dedicated to the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.

The center sits at the heart of a significant reconstruction project built on land where tragedy struck during the 2011 disaster. The site is located on the former grounds of Unosumai Elementary School, where over 160 people perished, though remarkably all students from the neighboring schools successfully evacuated. The broader Unosumai Tomosu area includes the Tsunami Memorial Hall (Miraikan), which offers disaster prevention learning programs, and the Kamaishi Memorial Park with a memorial wall listing the names of over 1,000 people who died or went missing in Kamaishi during the earthquake.

The Unosato Visitor Center operates primarily as a community facility that promotes tourism exchange and creates vibrancy by showcasing regional attractions. Inside, visitors find restaurants serving local cuisine, including hamburgers, omelets, spaghetti, and various takeaway options. The center also features a shop selling regional products and souvenirs, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Sanriku coast. The facility helps support the city's recovery by encouraging visitors to engage with the community and learn about both the area's resilience and its natural coastal beauty.

Visitor access is straightforward via the Sanriku Railway, with the center positioned approximately two minutes on foot from Unosumai Station. The nearby Kamaishi Unosumai Memorial Stadium, which hosted Rugby World Cup matches in 2019, stands about seven minutes away on foot. Admission to the visitor center itself is free, allowing travelers to explore the facilities, purchase local goods, and dine while learning about Kamaishi's journey of reconstruction and remembrance.
