Unzen Vidro Art Museum

The Unzen Vidro Art Museum opened in 1997 in the mountain resort town of Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, showcasing an extensive collection of Japanese and international glass art. Located in the Unzen-Amakusa National Park, the museum takes advantage of its scenic mountain setting at approximately 700 meters elevation, offering visitors views of the surrounding volcanic landscape that has made Unzen famous since the Meiji era when it became one of Japan's first international resort destinations.

The museum houses over 1,000 pieces of glass artwork spanning from ancient Roman glass to contemporary Japanese creations. The collection emphasizes 19th-century European decorative glass alongside works by prominent Japanese glass artists, providing insight into both the technical evolution of glassmaking and its artistic applications across cultures. The exhibition spaces are designed to maximize natural light, allowing the glass pieces to be viewed under varying conditions throughout the day. The museum is located in the Unzen hot spring district, accessible by bus from Isahaya Station on the JR Nagasaki Main Line. The journey takes approximately 80 minutes via the Shimabara Railway bus service. From Nagasaki city center, direct buses to Unzen operate with a travel time of roughly 90 minutes. Visitors often combine their museum visit with the nearby Unzen Jigoku (Unzen Hell), a volcanic hot spring area featuring steaming vents and bubbling pools just a short walk away. General admission is ¥1,000 for adults, with reduced rates for students and children. Workshop fees vary depending on the activity selected.
