Yakage Machiya Koryukan

The Yakage Machiya Koryukan is a cultural exchange facility located in the historic post-town of Yakage in Okayama Prefecture. Machiya, traditional wooden townhouses that originated as early as the Heian period and developed through the Edo period, once housed urban merchants and craftsmen known as chōnin. The facility preserves this architectural heritage while serving modern community needs in a town that flourished along the historic San'yōdō highway.

The building functions as both an information center and cultural venue, with the ground floor featuring an information section where details about local events are available and regional specialty products are sold. The second floor contains a Japanese-style room and rental spaces that can accommodate meetings, gatherings, and serve as a gallery for exhibitions. The standout feature is the Taniyama Salon, a multipurpose hall with traditional folk house atmosphere that holds up to 100 people and hosts concerts, lectures, public readings, and rakugo performances.

Visitors can experience authentic machiya architecture while exploring Yakage's post-town heritage. The facility serves as an ideal starting point for touring the preserved streetscapes of this former station town. The venue regularly hosts cultural events and provides insight into traditional townhouse living and local craftsmanship.

The facility is located approximately 10 minutes on foot from Ibara Railway Yakage Station or about 20 minutes by car from the Sanyo Expressway Kamogata IC. Admission to the facility is free, though rental fees apply for event spaces.
