Cable cars are great fun and the views are amazing.
Going up Mt Hiei was the highlight of my time in Kyoto. I got the train to the end of the line then walked to the cable car. Bought a ticket at the ticket machine - which only takes cash. I then rode the rope car to the top. From there I walked to the other side of the mountain which was absolutely stunning forest. I only passed a few people. It was so lovely listening to the birds. Beware: there is a small tunnel just past the tourist centre which can only be accessed by car or bus. So I had to wait for the bus to get through the tunnel and walk to the Cable car. I rode the cable car down the other side. A bus takes you to the train station a short trip away. It was not so touristy at all and really quiet when I went on a Tuesday. It is a stunning and easy walk and the cable cars a great fun.

Cable line boasting the largest altitude difference in Japan
I used this cable line when I went to Mt. Hiei from Kyoto. Eizan Cable line is operated by Keifuku Electric Railroad Co.,Ltd. The cable line has a vertical spacing of 561 m, which is the largest in Japan. In addition, it seems that it will be canceled in winter.
