The 7yr old and I did it, dressing up for the day. We wore kimonos for the warm day. They checked us for size and then let us chose which one we wanted to wear from a range.
I went with this shop as it had kimonos for my larger shape. (If you are researching to book a kimono wearing check how wide they can go if you are of the larger size).
English was limited but we were managed to work it out between us. They encourage you to go to the toilet beforehand as it's hard to go to the toilet in a kimono.
You can wear japanese sandals as well if you chose to. They are hard on your feet if you aren't used to wearing flipflops so you may want to take your shoes with you. They will store your clothes and any backpacks but not luggage.
We were the only english speakers there when we went to get ready.

A memorable and delightful experience!
We loved wearing kimono and yukata (it was a hot day!). Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was our first trip to Japan, and after 7 days of feeling a little lost, the kind staff told us just what to do and took care of everything. My husband and our friend looked so handsome. I had my hair and makeup done as well, and the ladies did such a great job! I haven't felt so pretty in a long time. We got so many compliments! Photographer Mao was wonderful and guided us through many poses. We have great photos from our trip that will last a lifetime! Next time I visit Kyoto, I will definitely use their services again.
