Embark on a seamless journey across Japan with the JR East Pass. From swift Shinkansens to quaint local trains, traverse iconic cities like Niigata, Nagano, and Tokyo with ease. Your all-in-one ticket to explore, experience, and enjoy the rich tapestry of Japan.

  • JR EAST Pass (Nagano & Niigata Area) – valid for 5 consecutive days

Eligibility & Restrictions

  • Valid only for travelers with a passport issued outside Japan.

  • The determination of adult or child fare is based on age at time of purchase. Verify age with passport or official document.

  • Children under 5 need a child’s pass if a reserved seat is required.

  • The pass is non-transferable and valid only for the person named on the E-Ticket and passport.

Validity & Requirements

  • E-Ticket validity: 3 months from date of issuance.

  • JR EAST Pass validity: 5 consecutive days from the chosen starting date.

  • Starting date selection: Must be within 1 month of exchange at a designated location in Japan. Once set, it cannot be changed.

  • Name accuracy: The name on the E-Ticket must match the passport exactly; mismatches prevent exchange.

  • Pass cannot be reissued if lost, even with an E-Ticket.

Usage & Terms

  • Always carry your passport and pass while traveling.

  • Use automatic ticket gates whenever possible.

  • Travel outside the designated area or on non-covered services requires additional fees.

  • Validity cannot be extended, nor is a refund issued for unused days or delays.

Trains & Facilities

  • Covers JR East lines in Nagano & Niigata area, including Shinkansen, limited express, and some local trains.

  • Excluded: Tokaido Shinkansen.

  • Joyful Trains can be used with advance free reserved seat tickets; TOHOKU EMOTION train cannot be used; Koshino Shu*Kura only allows Car 3 reservation.

  • Reserved seats on Shinkansen and limited express can be used without limitation during the 5-day period.

  • Pass holders using Gran Class, Green cars, or sleeper trains must purchase Super (Limited) Express Reserved Seats in advance.

Reserved Seat Tickets

  • Reserved seat tickets are required for Shinkansen and limited express trains.

  • Non-reserved seats do not require additional tickets.

  • Seat reservations can be made at JR EAST Reserved Seat Ticket Vending Machines, Travel Service Centers, or JR EAST Ticket Offices.

  • Reserved Seat Tickets cannot be issued at JR Central, Tokyo Metro, Odakyu, Keisei, or other non-JR East offices.

  • Return unused Reserved Seat Tickets at JR EAST Ticket Offices or Travel Service Centers before the train departs.

The JR EAST Pass is a rail pass for international travelers that provides unlimited travel on designated JR East trains, including Shinkansen, limited express, and local lines within the covered areas, such as Niigata, Nagano, and Tokyo.

The pass is available only to non-Japanese passport holders visiting Japan for tourism. You must present your original passport when exchanging your voucher for the pass.

The pass is valid for 5 consecutive days from the chosen starting date. For example, if activated on Monday, it remains valid through Friday.

The pass covers unlimited travel on covered JR East lines, including non‑reserved and reserved seats. Green Car and GranClass require additional fees. Some lines (e.g., Tokaido Shinkansen) and certain sections outside the coverage area are not included.

Bring your confirmation email (E‑Ticket) and passport to a designated JR East exchange location (e.g., JR EAST Travel Service Centers) in Japan to collect your physical pass.

Yes. Children 6–11 require a child pass. Children under 6 travel for free if not occupying a seat; a pass is needed only if you reserve a seat for them.

Yes. Certain sections like Minami‑Otari to Itoigawa and Itoigawa to Jōetsumyōkō on the Hokuriku Shinkansen are not covered and require additional tickets. The pass also cannot be used on lines outside the designated area.

The pass covers some JR buses within the valid area and partner lines like Tokyo Monorail, but many bus routes, subways, and other transport are not included.
