Garyu Sanso

Garyu Sanso is a historic villa and garden complex located in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan. The estate was built over a period of 30 years from 1894 to 1907 by a wealthy merchant named Torajiro Kochi, who also held the position of mayor of Ozu. The name translates to "Villa of the Reclining Dragon," inspired by the property's dramatic clifftop position overlooking the Hiji River, where the rocky terrain and surrounding landscape evoked the image of a crouching dragon.

The architectural and cultural significance of Garyu Sanso lies in its masterful integration of traditional Japanese aesthetics with the natural environment. The complex comprises several structures, including the Furoan tea house, which is perched on a cliff face and offers breathtaking views of the river gorge below. The villa demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, featuring materials such as thatched roofs, intricate wooden carvings, and rooms adorned with high-quality decorative elements including precious woods and elaborate ceiling designs.

Visitors can explore the main villa building, stroll through the meticulously maintained gardens, and experience the unique perspective from the Furoan tea house suspended over the river. The changing seasons bring distinct character to the property, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and occasional snow in winter creating varied atmospheric experiences. The site requires visitors to remove shoes before entering the traditional structures, and photography is generally permitted in most areas.

Garyu Sanso is located approximately 2.5 kilometers from JR Iyo-Ozu Station. Visitors can reach the villa by taxi in about 10 minutes or by walking in approximately 30 minutes along a scenic route through the historic town of Ozu. Local buses also serve the area, though schedules may be limited. Admission costs ¥550 for adults and ¥220 for elementary and junior high school students.
