本妙寺

Honmyoji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located in Kumamoto City, Japan, with origins tracing back to 1585 when it was founded by the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa. The temple belongs to the Nichiren sect of Buddhism and was established as the Kato family temple, serving as an important spiritual center for the ruling clan during the early Edo period. The temple's significance extends beyond religious practice, as it became deeply intertwined with the political and cultural history of the Kumamoto region.

The temple complex is particularly famous for its exceptional stone stairway, consisting of 176 steps flanked by towering stone lanterns and ancient trees. This dramatic approach creates one of the most photographed temple entrances in Kyushu. The grounds feature several well-preserved historic structures, including the main hall and bell tower, which showcase traditional Japanese temple architecture. The site is also renowned for its seasonal beauty, with hydrangeas creating spectacular displays in early summer, while autumn brings vibrant foliage that frames the temple buildings.

Visitors ascending the stone staircase experience a gradual transition from the secular world to the sacred temple grounds, with each step offering changing perspectives of the architecture and surrounding nature. The temple provides a contemplative atmosphere for quiet reflection, and guests can observe daily religious practices and architectural details of the historic buildings. The elevated position of the main hall offers pleasant views over the surrounding neighborhood. The temple grounds also contain memorial stones and monuments related to the Kato family and regional history.

Honmyoji Temple is accessible from Kumamoto Station by taking the Kumamoto City Tram to Honmyo-ji-mae stop, which places visitors directly at the base of the temple's famous stairway. The tram journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Alternatively, local buses serve the area, with stops within walking distance of the temple entrance. Admission to the temple grounds is free, though donations are welcomed.
