Japan National Stadium

The Japan National Stadium stands in Tokyo's Shinjuku district as the country's premier sporting venue and a landmark of modern Japanese architecture. Completed in 2019 at a cost of approximately ¥157 billion, the stadium replaced the historic National Stadium that served as the main venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid originally won the design competition, but her controversial plan was scrapped due to budget concerns. The final design by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma emphasizes traditional materials and environmental harmony, featuring 47 varieties of wood from all of Japan's prefectures integrated into the stadium's lattice-like exterior.

The stadium hosted the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics (held in 2021) and serves as the home ground for Japan's national football team. With a seating capacity of 68,000, it represents Japan's commitment to sustainable design, incorporating natural ventilation to reduce air conditioning needs and rainwater collection systems. The building's five-story structure includes space for athletic facilities, restaurants, and retail areas. The surrounding Meiji Jingu Gaien district offers walking paths, sports facilities, and the famous ginkgo tree-lined avenue.

Visitors can take stadium tours that provide access to the field, locker rooms, and VIP areas, offering insights into the venue's architectural innovations and Olympic legacy. The stadium regularly hosts international football matches, rugby games, and major concerts. From the upper levels, views extend across central Tokyo. The venue's design prioritizes accessibility, with facilities accommodating visitors with disabilities throughout.

The stadium is located a 5-minute walk from Sendagaya Station on the JR Chuo-Sobu Line or Kokuritsu-Kyogijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line. Gaienmae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line sits approximately 10 minutes away on foot. Tour admission costs around ¥1,500 for adults and ¥500 for children, though prices may vary for special events. Tickets for sporting events and concerts must be purchased separately depending on the event schedule.
