Makuhari Beach

Makuhari Beach stretches along the artificial coastline of Chiba City's Mihama Ward, approximately 30 kilometers east of central Tokyo. Developed during Japan's ambitious waterfront reclamation projects of the 1970s and 1980s, this beach forms part of the larger Makuhari New City urban development—a planned community that transformed Tokyo Bay's shoreline into a modern commercial and residential district. The beach itself was constructed using imported sand and engineered breakwaters to create a safe swimming environment in what was previously industrial waterfront.

The beach holds significance as one of the few accessible seaside recreation areas serving the greater Tokyo metropolitan region. While not a natural formation, it functions as an important public space where urban residents can experience coastal leisure without traveling to more distant beaches. The beach overlooks Tokyo Bay with views extending toward the Boso Peninsula, and on clear days, Mount Fuji becomes visible on the western horizon. The adjacent Makuhari Seaside Park integrates the beach into a larger green corridor that includes walking paths, sports facilities, and seasonal flower gardens.

Visitors to Makuhari Beach will find a 550-meter swimming area open during summer months, typically from early July through August. The beach features designated swimming zones monitored by lifeguards, along with shower facilities and changing rooms. Beyond swimming season, the beach serves as a venue for walking, jogging, and occasional events including beach volleyball tournaments and summer festivals. The nearby Makuhari Messe convention center and ZoZo Marine Stadium, home to the Chiba Lotte Marines baseball team, draw additional visitors to the area who often combine beach visits with other activities.

Access to Makuhari Beach is straightforward via the JR Keiyo Line, with Kaihin-Makuhari Station located approximately 15 minutes walk from the beach. Alternatively, Kemigawa Station on the JR Sobu Line provides access with a similar walking distance. Bus services connect both stations to the beach area. Entry to the beach is free of charge, though fees apply for parking facilities and equipment rentals such as beach umbrellas during peak season.
