Matsue Castle is a feudal-era castle in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, completed in 1611 by daimyo Horio Yoshiharu. The castle served as the Matsue domain's power seat during the Edo period, positioned on a hill overlooking Lake Shinji. The main keep is an original structure, one of only 12 remaining original castle towers in Japan and one of five designated as National Treasures. The castle survived Meiji demolition orders and wars, preserving early 17th-century architecture. Design features include stone dropping windows, arrow slits, and complex layout for defense. The preservation makes it a rare Edo-period castle architecture example.

The main keep stands five stories externally and six floors internally, reaching approximately 30 meters high. The black exterior earned the nickname "Plover Castle" (Chidori-jo). The grounds include the original moat system, stone walls, gates, and park areas. The castle associates with writer Lafcadio Hearn, who lived in Matsue in the late 19th century. The castle and moat create a historic district in central Matsue.

Visitors explore six interior floors connected by steep staircases typical of original castle construction. Exhibits display armor, weapons, historical documents, and artifacts related to castle history and the Matsue domain. Upper floors offer panoramic views of Matsue City, Lake Shinji, and surrounding mountains. Wooden interior construction, original beams, and architectural details are visible throughout, showing traditional building techniques.

The grounds include walking paths through surrounding park, stone wall fortifications, and reconstructed gates. Horikawa moat boat tours provide water-level perspectives of stone walls and the historical district. Cherry trees create popular spring viewing. The central Matsue location allows walking to nearby samurai residences, Lafcadio Hearn's former residence, and traditional merchant districts.

Matsue Castle is 20 to 30 minutes walking from JR Matsue Station on the JR San'in Main Line, or 10 minutes by bus. From Okayama, limited express trains take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Izumo Airport is 30 to 40 minutes by bus. Exterior viewing and grounds are free outside keep hours.
