Northern Horse Park

Northern Horse Park is a horse and nature theme park located in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, that was established in 1989 by Shadai Group, a prominent thoroughbred breeding organization. The park is affiliated with Northern Farm, one of Japan's leading racehorse breeding and training facilities known for producing many famous racehorses. This connection gives visitors unique access to view retired champions and learn about Japan's competitive equestrian culture.

The park spans an impressive 470,000 square meters and is home to approximately 80 horses representing about 12 different varieties, including majestic retired Thoroughbreds, ponies, and miniature horses. Visitors can observe these animals in well-maintained stables and meet notable retired racehorses, with some exhibits featuring memorial displays for champion horses. The facility also includes a horse gallery showcasing the achievements of Northern Farm's breeding program, making it particularly appealing to horse racing enthusiasts.

The park offers diverse interactive experiences centered on horses and nature. Popular equestrian activities include assisted horseback riding lessons, horse-drawn carriage tours through the scenic grounds, and pony leading experiences for children. The entertaining pony shows feature trained ponies performing various tricks and demonstrations. Beyond horse-related activities, the park features an expansive 33,000-square-meter botanical garden with approximately 1,000 varieties of seasonal flowers.

Seasonal recreation includes cycling, park golf, tennis, and Segway tours during warmer months, while winter transforms the grounds into a playground for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and snow rafting. The park houses multiple dining facilities, including the 500-capacity Backyard Grill barbecue restaurant and the 200-seat Garden Restaurant overlooking the botanical gardens, both featuring fresh Hokkaido ingredients and locally baked bread.

Northern Horse Park is exceptionally convenient for travelers, located just 15 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport. A free shuttle bus operates between the airport and the park, making it easily accessible for those with limited time. Visitors traveling by train can take a taxi or local bus from JR New Chitose Airport Station, approximately 15 minutes away. By car, the park is accessible via the Shin-Chitose Airport IC or Tomakomai IC exits. The park provides free parking with capacity for 500 vehicles.
